Career Background
Scott is perhaps best known for leading the Goldman Sachs team advising Vodafone in its successful $200 billion acquisition of Mannesmann, the largest and possibly the most complex contested transaction ever completed.
This is how he began his career:
After graduating in Law, Scott began an investment banking career in New York. In 1987, he relocated to London with Goldman Sachs as part of a small group that built Goldman's business in Europe. For a high performing American to leave Wall Street and move to Europe in 1987 was not the most most obvious choice. Several friends attempted to dissuade him, but London was calling.
The Goldman team in Europe rapidly grew the business. Scott was responsible for many of Goldman Sach’s largest clients in Europe, Asia and the United States and headed deal teams in major transactions in over 25 countries. He was centrally involved in advising many governments and political leaders during the privatization wave which swept Europe and Asia during the 1990’s as countries sought to deregulate and grow their economies to compete in a globalizing world.
While at Goldman Sachs, Scott’s business and management responsibilities included heading European privatizations, and building and leading European and Global Communications, Media and Technology. He was a key member of various internal committees within Goldman.
In a short span of 5 years, he led teams in completing transactions with an aggregate value of over $500 billion.
